''This is not a small thing. Now we can dream in colour''. Mr Mbewe, Headteacher

Theke Primary School

We have been working with the Head Teacher, Mr Mbewe, since 2018 when we conducted our first site visit. With two, community built brick classrooms, a mud-brick Church and a classroom made of grass, the facilities were very in desperate need of development. Things became worse in the spring of 2019 year, when Cyclone Idai struck the coast of Mozambique. Strong winds and rain whipped up the Rift Valley and ripped the roof from Theke Primary School. It demolished the Church and left many houses damaged.

In March 2019, our team of builders arrived at Theke to start working hand in hand with the community to build two new, safe classrooms. The rooms were painted and decorated by a team of our volunteers from Spain, Malawi and the UK and were furnished with desks and chairs. The school block was officially opened in November 2019 and in November 2020 we completed renovation work the two classrooms damaged by Cyclone Idai.

We are pleased to say that the school has now complete with a fully stocked library, a toilet block, permaculture gardens and topped off with it’s own bore hole; serving both the community and the school.

We would like to thank two generous grants from The Fonthill Foundation who supported us in furnishing the classrooms and digging the borehole.
